US 26, Dubois Mitigation Strategy

US 26 around Dubois is one of the most dangerous highway segments in Wyoming for both motorists and wildlife in terms of wildlife-vehicle collision (WVC) risk. ECO-resolutions was engaged by Wyoming Game and Fish Department and the Wyoming Department of Transportation to conduct a wildlife mitigation assessment for US 26 in collaboration with other agency, tribal, and non-profit partners. The purpose of the mitigation assessment was to compile and evaluate wildlife habitat and movement data, wildlife-vehicle collision datasets, and other information to inform the development of cost-effective mitigation solutions for reducing wildlife-vehicle conflict, improving driver safety, and maintaining permeability for wildlife movement across US 26. The resulting multi-pronged mitigation strategy outlines a common vision that identifies and prioritizes important wildlife movement areas and wildlife-highway conflict zones on US 26 around Dubois, with site-specific mitigation recommendations identified in each segment, and highlights two priority segments for near-term mitigation.
